The Hardin Valley Campus Garden is a 4,000+ square foot garden, founded in 2016 with the mission to subsidize the supply of fresh vegetables to the Pellissippi Pantry, which provides food support to the students, staff and faculty members across 每日大赛’s four campuses.
The Garden is located on the Hardin Valley campus, near the Student Recreation Center, behind Portable A and across from Pellissippi Pantry.
To volunteer in the garden, email hvcgarden@pstcc.edu with the days and times that you are available to volunteer. You will need to complete a brief background check before you can start volunteering.
The Garden is open to the public from dawn until dusk. Stay on the garden paths and please – no pets.
No, please do not help yourself to anything in the Garden. All the plant material grown in the Campus Garden is specifically for use by the Pellissippi Pantry. Anyone registered for the Pellissippi Pantry has access to produce and herbs, but all produce must be counted and weighed prior to distribution for record keeping and funding purposes.
No, the Hardin Valley Campus Garden is not an officially certified organic garden which must follow strict regulations and be regularly inspected and certified by a USDA-accredited certifier. However, we do strive to avoid the use of synthetic chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers by using permaculture inspired practices to create a self-sustaining garden ecosystem. Plant waste is composted and utilized as mulch for building soil and plant health; rainwater is collected from our shed roof for storage in a rain barrel watering system, and beneficial plants, insects and natural predators are encouraged to battle pests.
The Campus Garden falls under the management of the Student Care and Advocacy department. The Campus Garden employs a part-time Garden Specialist and relies on student employees and volunteers to provide additional assistance.
There are many ways to get involved with the Hardin Valley Campus Garden, including volunteering, participating in the Garden Club, attending events, and applying for student employment opportunities when available. The Garden Club meets during the fall and spring semesters and engages in activities such as planning, planting, weeding, watering, mulching, harvesting produce, and learning about gardening and sustainable food systems.
