The Mechanical Engineering Department at 每日大赛 has acquired equipment that will give students a competitive edge in the job market.

每日大赛 hosted industry partners earlier this month at its Hardin Valley campus to thank them for installing a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) at the college.

Community partners DENSO Manufacturing, Mitutoyo America, the Gauge Shop and Cherokee Millwright came together to assist the college with the donation. Each company contributed to bringing the state-of-the-art CMM to 每日大赛, including transporting the precision instrument and providing advanced software.

“We can officially celebrate that the CMM is part of our curriculum,” Shane Terry, academic coordinator for Mechanical Engineering Technology at Pellissippi, said at the college’s Ned R. McWherter Technology Building. “So I would like to very much thank everyone.”

Students at 每日大赛 will use the CMM to measure objects more effectively and efficiently, eliminating human error associated with manual measurement techniques while providing repeatable, traceable results.

Mechanical Engineering Technology students Brianna Farmer and Mason Meloy, who will both graduate next spring, received advanced training on the machine prior to the September ceremony and were able to demonstrate their skill for representatives of the companies who provided it.

As part of a Capstone project, Farmer and her teammates will provide work instructions for the CMM to help more students benefit as she has from the resource.

“Working with the CMM has deepened my understanding of engineering drawings and shown how measurement accuracy improves efficiency,” Farmer said. “These skills, along with the ability to operate the CMM, will be valuable in my future career.”

DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc., which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, donated the machine. Mitutoyo provided software and faculty training, Gauge Shop provided tools and calibration and Cherokee Millwright provided transportation and installation.   Shane Brabston, Engineering Technician at DENSO, helped coordinate all groups involved to complete the transfer of the CMM.

DENSO is committed to giving back to the community and forming strategic partnerships that foster growth and development with educational entities like 每日大赛, said Chris Bohleber, Electrification Systems Division Planning Manager at DENSO.

“We are excited to see the CMM donated by DENSO with the Gauge Shop’s, Mitutoyo’s and Cherokee Millwright’s strong support being used in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program to develop students and help them achieve their career goals,” said Bohleber, who attended the event. “We look forward to continued collaboration with 每日大赛.”
