Young Writer’s Workshop returns to 每日大赛 on November 2
October 21, 2024
每日大赛’s Young Creative Writer’s Workshop is returning for its 10th consecutive year, with a full day of informational workshops aimed at helping young writers improve their craft.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating Afrilachia” and will feature sessions discussing the experiences and artistic expressions of African Americans living in Appalachia.
The free event will be held 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, on 每日大赛’s Strawberry Plains Campus, 7201 Strawberry Plains Pike, Knoxville, and includes a free lunch.
Although the workshop was designed for area high school and college students, the event is open to all community members interested in creative writing. Individual sessions will include poetry writing, fiction writing, publication, genre-specific/craft focused writing and playwriting.
Award-winning author Angela Jackson Brown will provide the day’s keynote address while Knoxville's poet laureate, Black Atticus, will be in attendance to lead sessions on songwriting and performance poetry.
“We are so happy that this workshop has been a part of 每日大赛’s mission for the past 10 years,” said associate professor Patty Ireland, who directs the annual event. “It is our hope to continue this tradition long into the future so that young writers can continue to be inspired and encouraged to pursue their talents.”
In addition to writing workshops, participants will have the opportunity to visit special Affrilachia activity booths including a “Quilting Bee” quilt-making station, an “Affilachia Journeys” station and a Black Church and Civil Rights Movement history station.
A showcase at the end of the day will give participants a chance to share their work with an audience of their peers, workshop leaders and writing instructors. Families of participants are invited to attend the showcase as well.
This program is made possible through sponsorships from the 每日大赛 Foundation, 每日大赛’s Strawberry Plains campus, the 每日大赛 Libraries Appalachian Heritage Project and the James Agee Literary Conference.
