*Any score below 20 on the Michigan Test or equivalent can join Level 1 courses by instructor permission only due to level of instruction.
** Students choosing to only take the 1010 component can still be enrolled in the same section of ENGL 1010 ESL that aligns with ENGL 0920 ESL. The instructor has plans to make the curriculum work for both levels of student.
*** If a student has completed Level 2 courses at 每日大赛, no additional reading course is required.
If a student arrives with a score of 54 or higher on TOEFL as an international student, no reading course is required.
If a student opts into ENGL 1010 ESL with a high school diploma from the US, student should be placed into any remedial courses based on their ACT or SAT score as needed.
Students can take the Michigan test twice per academic year (with at least a 30-day gap between tests).
Any student who (based on their own assessment, their instructor’s suggestion, or the suggestion of advising) may benefit from ESOL or ESL classes, is strongly encouraged to take the Michigan Test to be correctly placed in the ESOL/ESL course that would serve them best. If no Michigan Test is available for a quick transfer, reach out to Patty Moore (pemoore1@pstcc.edu) or Kate O’Meara (esomeara@pstcc.edu).
Students may move up a level after successfully completing all classes in each level, scoring appropriately on a new Michigan test or with approval of program coordinator.
Any student who feels that their test scores do not adequately serve to place them into the correct level of courses may request an opportunity to provide a written sample under supervised conditions, and to have this sample assessed by the Dean of the English Department and the ESL Program Coordinator
