Majors, and careers, in Plant Science focus on understanding how plants grow, reproduce, adapt, and contribute to ecosystems and agriculture, and on understanding, managing, and protecting one of Earth’s most vital natural resources—soil.
Area of Interest: School of Sciences and Nursing
Program Location: Blount County Campus
Outcome: Associate of Science (A.S.)
Majors, and careers, in Plant Science focus on understanding how plants grow, reproduce, adapt, and contribute to ecosystems and agriculture, and on understanding, managing, and protecting one of Earth’s most vital natural resources—soil. Soil scientists work in agriculture, environmental consulting, land development, forestry, and government agencies, studying soil composition, fertility, erosion, and contamination. They may help farmers improve crop yields, advise on sustainable land use, assess sites for construction projects, or remediate polluted land and water systems. With growing concerns about climate change, food security, and environmental conservation, soil scientists play a critical role in carbon sequestration, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable resource management.
Professionals in this field work as plant breeders, agronomists, horticulturists, plant biotechnologists, and environmental consultants, applying knowledge of genetics, soil science, ecology, and plant physiology. They may work in research labs, farms, universities, government agencies, or private agricultural companies to improve crop yields, develop disease-resistant varieties, promote sustainable farming, and address global challenges like food security and climate change. With growing demand for sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, plant science offers diverse and impactful career opportunities.
Clubs and Organizations
Agriculture Club
As a collegiate FFA and 4H charter, the 每日大赛 Agricultural Club is designed to bring together students who were involved in FFA, 4H or other agriculture related clubs in high school. The club hopes to keep students involved with ag-related activities on the college level and continue to prepare students for careers in agriculture. Contact: Chris Milne, chmilne@pstcc.edu
The Plant and Soil Science pathway is intended to offer students an opportunity to earn an Associate of Science degree and transfer to a university.
